Pre-planning Meet #2 - Vedauwoo, WY Aug. 20-24, 2012 - Hike, Bike, Climb, & Honky Tonkin'

About 11,000 years ago mankind began dropping into Vedauwoo to explore it's weird geography, the French followed up in the mid 1700s, and by the 1840s the Overland Trail was making stops at Fort Laramie and it's been Hell on Wheels ever since. Vedauwoo comes from the Arapahoe "biito'o'wu and it's sometimes known as the Skull Rocks. It's considered one of the top sites in the US for off width crack climbing and bouldering, with at least one 3 pitch climb (hint - I won't be trying that one).

The purpose of this pre-planning is to advertise the trip and see if there are others who are interested in coming along, I really don't like hiking and climbing by myself if I can help it :) This invitation is extended to Hill Country Outdoors members (I'm an event leader), Austin Rock Gym, and the Austin Indoor / Outdoor Rock Climbing Community meet up. If you know of others please pass the info along.

Each individual is responsible for their own transportation and other costs as incurred. Round trip flights are generally in the $400 range and budget for approx. $100/night for room. Packages run around $800 depending on a variety of factors. There is a fee for the camp site and I'll take care of that myself.

Unfortunately the Vertical Dance event won't happen this year, perhaps we'll be lucky next year.

The timeline that I expect we'll be using is something like this, individuals are welcome to improvise as their interest motivates them:

Monday - Arrive in town, get checked in, and get together for any last minute issues.

Tuesday - AM we'll get our equipment and supplies like foot and head out to Vedauwoo. I'd like to get there pretty early in the afternoon to get some climbing and biking in and still have time to set up camp.

Wednesday - Hike, bike, and climb! I don't intent to camp Wed. night and will be coming back into town for a bath and maybe some wandering around town site seeing.

Thursday - Siteseeing and wandering around.

Friday - Make sure all issues are resolved and head home.

I don't intend to rent a car, the town is small enough that we can walk or bike to just about anywhere we would want to go. We'll be using Here and There shuttle service to get to and from Vedauwoo, other arrangements are possible.

I'd like to ship a container with climbing gear, tents, sleeping bag, heavier clothing, etc. up about a week to ten days before we arrive. I have a couple of aluminum surplus military shipping boxes.

The weather should be generally clear with highs in the 80s but the lows can be near freezing, so be sure to bring warm clothes. The altitude is over 8,000 ft. so you can expect to have some discomfort while exerting yourself, we won't be there long enough to experience any significant acclimatization.
